You can’t beat Cape Town for sun, sand, sea and lot’s of great memories. It has everything you need for a great holiday – bars, shops, cafe’s, beaches, mountains and friendly people. Great wines are an added bonus! If you like outdoor adventure then hit the waters for a dive or the mountains for a hike.

The Cango Caves are truly spectacular, they formed millions of years ago when water began trickling down a small ridge of limestone that runs parallel to the Swatberg Mountains. They now stretch for over 3 miles, the largest cavern being 107m long and 6m high. The caves are situated near Oudtshoorn which is famous for Ostrich, you can even have a ride on one at one of the farms!

South West Wales, UK: Rock Holidays

Monday, January 12th, 2009

The Pembrokeshire Coast is one of the most scenic and tranquil coasts in the UK. Full of breathtaking views and typical Welsh culture there is everything you need for a great British holiday. Pendine Sands is not far from the Brecon Beacons, Tenby and Haverfordwest meaning you can visit the local towns, the stunning hills or relax on the beach.

The geology of this area is truly outstanding. There are so many different rock types and outcrops to see you will be spoiled for choice. From the volcanic pillow lavas at Strumble Head to the limestones filled with fossils in West Angle Bay, coal seams, desert soils and twisted rocks are just some of what you might see. How about a trip to Pen Anglas to see the columnar jointed volcanic rocks similar to those you see in the World famous Giants Causeway. Don’t forget to visit Marloes Beach which has masses of beach overlooked by cliffs full of geological features including ‘The 3 Chimneys’ which are alternate layers of shale and sanstone that are now vertical. The most interesting place for fossils has to be Abereiddy Bay which is full of rare fossils including Graptolites and Trilobites, you may even find a ‘mystery mollusc’ in amongst the shales.

Las Vegas, North America: Rock Holidays

Monday, December 22nd, 2008

You may think Las Vegas is full of wedding chapels, bright lights of casinos and world famous celebrities. Whilst that may be true what you may not know about Las Vegas and the area it lays in are the breath-taking rock formations that you will stumble across as you venture out of the bright lights of the city and into the surrounding desert and mountains. The mountains and desert can be seen from the Las Vegas Strip.

To the West of Las Vegas run the Spring Mountains, and the Red Rock Canyon. Full of amazing structures where the Earth has shifted and thrust the rocks around and layers of different sediments creating colourful bands of rock. Red Rock Canyon is formed from many layers of a deep red sandstone. It has been made a National Conservation area and is only a very short drive from Las Vegas. Spring Mountains are named after the vast amount of natural springs found in the mountain range.
