Monday, March 30th, 2009

Latvia ‘The Land That Sings’.  Whether you’re interested in museums, medieval castles or nature reserves Latvia offers them all. Latvian craftsmen have kept traditions alive which have been passed down from their ancestors, these can be seen in workshops and museums all over the country and include woodcarvers, potters, carpenters, stonemasons, weavers and tailors. Hunting and fishing are popular as there are many lakes as is boating and accommodation can be found in campsites, farmhouses or guesthouses. Watch out if you go hiking as you may see wildlife such as elk, deer, brown bears and wolves in the national parks. Latvia is a country with beautiful nature, wonderful people and great history.

Riga sits not too far away from the coast of the Baltic Sea. A Sea famed for once being a massive river bed. As the Earth shifted around, so the sea was formed. It is one of the largest inland seas and has a very low salinity. The Baltic Sea coast offers a varied coastline with white sandy beaches and rock formations, at certain times of the year even Baltic Amber can be found.

Chania is a great town placed in the West of Crete. Sitting on the coast it has long stretches of sandy beach, bars and taverna’s and a beautiful Venetian Harbour. The old town is full of character and charm and the new town provides everything you need for a truly awesome holiday, from markets to cosmopolitan shops you can’t go wrong.

The Samaria Gorge lies in the Western side of Crete and is it’s only National Park. Created by the river running between the white mountains and Mt Volakias, the gorge runs for 16km. Visitors are advised to take a few drinks for the walk as it’s a steep walk down, then you can either go back up or catch a boat at the end back to the town (the better option!)

Goa, India: Geology Holidays

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Goa is situated on the West coast of India and is home to stunning beaches, ancient buildings and bags of culture. When the Portuguese first landed in Goa in the 16th Century as merchants they left behind a strong Portugese influence which existed until the 1960’s. You can experience incredible plants, animals and people – a true once in a lifetime holiday. You name it, Goa has it.

India has complex geology as the whole Country has moved around. It moved from the South of the Earth where it collided with the rest of the Asian Continent, creating the Himalayas. It has also faced mass periods of Volcanic activity (The Deccan Traps), meteors landing (the Lonar Crater) and massive folding and breaking of the rocks that helped to form the Western Ghats that run through Goa. The Western Ghats are not mountains, they are part of a massive fault/crack in the ground.

Riga, Latvia: River Holidays

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Riga is home to four stunningly gorgeous rivers which cut through the landscape creating incredible scenery. Riga itself is the Capital of Latvia. Riga is full of interesting architecture and historic buildings, the historic centre is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the rivers in Latvia are fed by lakes and the melted ice from the mountains to the East. Latvia is an underestimated holiday destination, but is truly stunning.

The five rivers in and around the city of Riga are The Dauga River, The Lielupe River, The Salaca River and The Gauja River. Each river has shaped the surrounding landscape over thousands of years and is still shaping it now. There are some impressive waterfalls and cliffs along the river banks of the rivers. The Gauja River even has it’s own National Park where you will see the the evidence of the river cutting through the sandstone.
