Riga, Latvia: River Holidays
Thursday, December 18th, 2008Riga is home to four stunningly gorgeous rivers which cut through the landscape creating incredible scenery. Riga itself is the Capital of Latvia. Riga is full of interesting architecture and historic buildings, the historic centre is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the rivers in Latvia are fed by lakes and the melted ice from the mountains to the East. Latvia is an underestimated holiday destination, but is truly stunning.
The five rivers in and around the city of Riga are The Dauga River, The Lielupe River, The Salaca River and The Gauja River. Each river has shaped the surrounding landscape over thousands of years and is still shaping it now. There are some impressive waterfalls and cliffs along the river banks of the rivers. The Gauja River even has it’s own National Park where you will see the the evidence of the river cutting through the sandstone.
