Riga, Latvia: River Holidays

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

Riga is home to four stunningly gorgeous rivers which cut through the landscape creating incredible scenery. Riga itself is the Capital of Latvia. Riga is full of interesting architecture and historic buildings, the historic centre is even a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Many of the rivers in Latvia are fed by lakes and the melted ice from the mountains to the East. Latvia is an underestimated holiday destination, but is truly stunning.

The five rivers in and around the city of Riga are The Dauga River, The Lielupe River, The Salaca River and The Gauja River. Each river has shaped the surrounding landscape over thousands of years and is still shaping it now. There are some impressive waterfalls and cliffs along the river banks of the rivers. The Gauja River even has it’s own National Park where you will see the the evidence of the river cutting through the sandstone.

Sorrento, Italy: Volcano Holidays

Tuesday, December 16th, 2008

Sorrento is draped in lemon trees with lemons the size of your head which of course make Limoncello the famous Italian alcoholic digestif. Found in the South West of Italy (just before the toe of the boot!) Sorrento is situated in panoramic mountains, that cascade into the clear blue seas overlooking Naples.

Situated between Sorrento and Naples lies one of the most famous volcanoes in the world, Mount Vesuvius. A short trip on Circumvesuviana rail line which takes you round the bay giving you incredible views will bring you to the base of Vesuvious. You can get a bus most of the way up the volcano and will be dropped off just below the summit (luckily there is a cafe and gift shops if you need a breather first) I would recommend hiring a cane to help you up to the craters edge.

These are a few of my pictures when I went in March 2007, snow on the top but gorgeous sunshine too!

Almeria, Spain: Rock Holidays

Monday, December 15th, 2008

Almeria is situated in the South of Spain in the East on the Mediterranean Sea. It has a hot dry climate with bright blue skies and rolling hills.Long stretches of beach lay next to the warm seas where you can relax before your adventure begins.

There are extinct volcanoes laced with Garnets, that trust me you can spend days picking. There are rugged mountains to climb made from ancient reef material (Porites) huge caves filled with gypsum creating the largest natural geode in the world – The Crystal Caves. Almeria is full of fascinating rocks from volcanic to fossil-filled rocks to rocks that have been twisted and turned under the huge pressures of the Earth. Head to the Cabo de Gata-Nijar Natural Park and climb to the top to see spectacular views across Almeria.

Tenerife: Volcano Holiday

Saturday, December 6th, 2008

Tenerife isn’t just famed for booze and beaches, it is also home to one of the most incredible volcanoes this planet has to show. Mt Teide stands at 3718 metres above sea level and dominates the island. Surrounded by the UNESCO World Heritage Site National Park – Parque Nacional del Teide (Teide National Park). The voclano is home to a cable car that takes you to very near the top. On a clear day the views are incredible, even on an unclear day you will not be disappointed by what this magical volcano has to offer.

Tenerife itself lays just off the West Coast of Africa in the Canary Islands. The largest of the seven islands Tenerife is a Spanish island that has great weather all the year round. The immaculate beaches and blue skies make it a hugely popular tourist destination for young and old all through the year.
