Chania, Crete – Greece: Gorge Holidays

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Chania is a great town placed in the West of Crete. Sitting on the coast it has long stretches of sandy beach, bars and taverna’s and a beautiful Venetian Harbour. The old town is full of character and charm and the new town provides everything you need for a truly awesome holiday, from markets to cosmopolitan shops you can’t go wrong.

The Samaria Gorge lies in the Western side of Crete and is it’s only National Park. Created by the river running between the white mountains and Mt Volakias, the gorge runs for 16km. Visitors are advised to take a few drinks for the walk as it’s a steep walk down, then you can either go back up or catch a boat at the end back to the town (the better option!)

Masca, Tenerife: Canyon Holidays

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Masca is a small village set in the middle of the Teno Mountains in the Buenavista del Norte area of Tenerife. The winding roads through the mountains give you breath taking views of the island and the mountains. There is a small square and church in the town and a great bar that sells gifts and cactus ice cream – a must try in the hot weather of Tenerife. Masca is known as the most beautiful village on Tenerife and it is not hard to see why.

Masca Canyon is incredible. It leads you down to the ocean where you can relax before taking a walk back up to the village, or you can hire a local and their boat to collect you at the bottom and take you for a boat ride. Masca Canyon is full of interesting rocks held in its high steep cliff like sides. The canyon used to flow with water and even 400 years ago Columbus noted it. The sides of the canyon have little ledges where sediment and ancient soils can still be found, these have been used to prove the existence of a once free flowing river.

Nice, France: Canyon Holidays

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

Nice is found in the South of France on the Côte d’Azur. One of France’s most popular holiday destinations due to it’s location on the Mediterranean Coast and the east access due to it’s very own airport. With it’s sunny climate, French hospitality and bags of culture and fabulous food, Nice is definitely on the list of ‘must visit’s’

Les Gorges du Verdon is the largest canyon in Europe, and the second largest on Earth after the Grand Canyon. The Canyon itself began life in the Triassic period around 200 million years ago when layers of limestone were deposited, in the following millions of years layers of coral reef were deposited, then the area underwent some movement causing the limestones to fracture, some glaciers then remodeled the landscape giving the Verdon River chance to carve the magnificant views you see today.

Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt: Canyon Holidays

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

Sharm El Sheikh is the place to go if you love to dive, want to try diving or fancy some snorkelling. It has clear tropical waters brimming with all the colours you can imagine, fish, coral reefs and wrecks are just some of the things you can discover. If diving isn’t for you then why not relax on the long stretches of white sandy beach. Or the local bedouin tribes with their colourful tents or the desert or the mountains. You will never be stuck for something to do.

Geologically, Sharm El Sheik is very interesting, from Mt Sinai, to the Sulphur Springs, the desert, the beaches, the underwater geology and the Sinai Peninsular itself. One of the most fascinating and incredible sites to see is the Coloured Canyon. Yellows, blues, reds, purples and greens are amongst some of the colours you will see in the canyons. Here old rivers have cut their way through the rocks creating incredible views of the layers deposited through time.
