Paphos, Cyprus: Mountain Holidays

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Paphos was once the capital of Cyprus and so is home to a plethora of cultures. Bars, cafes and restaurants mixed with the history of the ancient Greeks and their Gods. There are clubs and plush hotels or traditional eateries and friendly faces. Sit on the port of Kato Pafos and watch the sunset as you eat great food, talk about the good times and watch the sunset or rise. Truly magical.

Mount Olympos is at the heart of the Troodos Mountains and stands at an impressive 6,402 feet. Although it is home to a military base in the winter it turns into a small ski area. It has an old temple to Aphrodite on it as well as an abandoned chromite mine in Hadjipavlou.

Fuerteventura, Canary Islands: Volcano Holidays

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

Fuerteventura is the oldest of the Canary Islands and is home to stunning endless beaches, the Atlantic Ocean and blue skies. You will find everything on this island from Bars and Clubs to small secluded spots to get away from it all. Magnificent landscapes and beautiful weather make it a must visit.

Dating back over 20 million years the island is still a geological baby, the majority of the island is only 5 million years old! The volcano itself is dormant and has not been active for around 5000 years. A mixture of eroded pumice and rocky grounds the volcano is an incredible contrast from the long stretches of beach you will find on the island. You won’t see many plants towards the interior of the island as it is so dry, you might spot the odd lizard though!

Goa, India: Geology Holidays

Sunday, February 8th, 2009

Goa is situated on the West coast of India and is home to stunning beaches, ancient buildings and bags of culture. When the Portuguese first landed in Goa in the 16th Century as merchants they left behind a strong Portugese influence which existed until the 1960’s. You can experience incredible plants, animals and people – a true once in a lifetime holiday. You name it, Goa has it.

India has complex geology as the whole Country has moved around. It moved from the South of the Earth where it collided with the rest of the Asian Continent, creating the Himalayas. It has also faced mass periods of Volcanic activity (The Deccan Traps), meteors landing (the Lonar Crater) and massive folding and breaking of the rocks that helped to form the Western Ghats that run through Goa. The Western Ghats are not mountains, they are part of a massive fault/crack in the ground.

Cancun, Mexico: Underground River Holidays

Saturday, February 7th, 2009

Cancun is on the East side of Mexico, on the Yucatán Peninsula, known as the Mexican Caribbean. Home to stunning white sand beaches, great weather and an all round idyllic holiday feel. There is something for everyone, from shops to bars and traditional to modern. Cancun is great for families or for a great party holiday.

The whole of the Yucatán Peninsula hides an underground secret. Made from limestone the peninsular has become an easy target for underground rivers to be formed which in turn have created a ‘Swiss cheese’ type formation full of holes. Some of the rivers in this vast system run for over 96 miles! It is this immense quantity of water that helps to keep the peninsular lush with jungle. Full of huge Stalactites and Stalagmites you can descend into a Cenote (sink hole) and swim or dive in this vast underwater oasis.

Masca, Tenerife: Canyon Holidays

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Masca is a small village set in the middle of the Teno Mountains in the Buenavista del Norte area of Tenerife. The winding roads through the mountains give you breath taking views of the island and the mountains. There is a small square and church in the town and a great bar that sells gifts and cactus ice cream – a must try in the hot weather of Tenerife. Masca is known as the most beautiful village on Tenerife and it is not hard to see why.

Masca Canyon is incredible. It leads you down to the ocean where you can relax before taking a walk back up to the village, or you can hire a local and their boat to collect you at the bottom and take you for a boat ride. Masca Canyon is full of interesting rocks held in its high steep cliff like sides. The canyon used to flow with water and even 400 years ago Columbus noted it. The sides of the canyon have little ledges where sediment and ancient soils can still be found, these have been used to prove the existence of a once free flowing river.
